From multiple surprising outcomes to many different injuries, including Tua Tagovailoa’s fourth concussion, week 2 of the 2024 NFL season has been a big week for football. Week 2 also came with a lot of late-game drama, the biggest being the Chiefs sending the Bengals back to Cincinnati with a record of 0-2 after a 51-yard field goal by Harrison Butker to secure the win, and the Lions with a failed attempt at a game-winning fourth-quarter drive against the Buccaneers. Let’s get into this recap.
Saints vs. Cowboys
The secret Super Bowl contenders took home a surprising win against the Cowboys from Arlington, Texas, with an impressive score of 44-19. Running back Alvin Kamara had a great game, scoring 4 touchdowns and helping the Saints end the Cowboys’ 16 home-game winning streak in the regular season. This was a surprising defeat for the 6.5-point favorite Cowboys and showed that the Saints may actually be Super Bowl contenders.
Texans vs. Bears
Two young guns faced off on Sunday Night Football, with Caleb Williams and the Bears falling short to C.J. Stroud and the Texans, with a final score of 19-13. Chicago’s offense was a mess Sunday night, averaging 3.1 yards per play, while Caleb Williams went 23 of 37 for 137 yards and threw 2 interceptions.
Buccaneers vs. Lions
The Buccaneers are making an early statement, defeating Washington in week 1 and holding down the powerful Lions at Ford Field on Sunday. Although Goff wasn’t shining last night, finishing with 34 of 55 for 307 yards, other Lions were on fire, as Aidan Hutchinson finished the first quarter with 3 sacks and a career-high of 4.5 at the end of the game. Amon-Ra St. Brown had a great game with 11 receptions and 119 receiving yards but ended up getting injured on the final drive in the fourth quarter, which is now appearing to be just “soft tissue,” according to head coach Dan Campbell.
Tua Tagovailoa’s Injury
Miami’s quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered his fourth concussion on Thursday Night Football against the Bills. Many are discussing whether Tagovailoa should stay in the league or retire. I believe that he should retire because if he suffers another concussion, he will be risking how long he gets to live with his family. He has made it public that he does not plan on retiring, so we will see whether that turns out to be detrimental for him and his family.
Raiders vs. Ravens
The Raiders, who are not known for being anything special, beat what was believed to be one of the best teams in the league, the Ravens, with a score of 26-23. The Raiders made a stunning comeback, dragging the Ravens to a record of 0-2 after a defeat to the Chiefs in week 1. A team that was thought to be a top Super Bowl contender may be falling off, in my opinion. I don’t think this team is as good as the hype suggests, and I definitely don’t think they have what it takes to make it to the Super Bowl this year.
