The Wolverines have brought back several key members of their National Championship defense this season, including Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Josaiah Stewart, Derrick Moore along the line, and Will Johnson at cornerback.
However, the secondary has been hit with some unexpected issues. Rod Moore suffered what might be a season-ended injury in spring camp and safety Keon Sabb transferred to Alabama. This leaves plenty of question marks surrounding Johnson in the defensive backfield.
Head Coach Sherrone Moore took some big steps towards addressing those issues late last week when he landed four defensive backs via the transfer portal between Thursday and Saturday evening.
The first commitment came from Aamir Hall, a cornerback from Albany College. He was ranked a three-star prospect in the portal.
Next came former Tennessee and Louisville safety Wesley Walker and former Michigan State safety Jaden Mangham. They were both three-star prospects in the portal as well.
Finally, Ricky Johnson III, from UNLV, joined the Wolverines late on Saturday. He is also a three-star transfer.
Hall, Walker, and Johnson are all listed at 6-foot-1, and Mangham is 6-foot-2. Moore made big pushes toward securing the defensive side of the ball. Now the offense needs a little buffing, many key playmakers are still in the portal that the Wolverines have the eyes on.
The portal is still full of offensive playmakers and tackles, the Wolverines need to keep an eye on these few targets as the season continues to creep forward.
The offensive tackle Issiah Walker Jr. has been in the portal for a while now, he remains one of the best offensive linemen in the portal. Currently, he is ranked at a three-star according to 247. com.
Malik McClain, the wide receiver, has also been in the portal for a while. The 6-4, jump ball receiver, has been crystal balled to go to ASU for a few days now. However, things can always change in the portal with coaching changes and whatnot.
Lastly, another offensive lineman, Golden Israel-Achumba. The man was a beast at Penn St., and he will continue to be. Michigan had six linemen depart for the NFL after winning their national championship, so they need depth once again. Golden could very well become a target for the Wolverines as they look to secure the new starting QB in September.
Michigan football as of right now is in a good spot recruiting-wise. They have secured the defense, now they work to cement the offense. Michigan once again will be a force in the fall, the only question is what the roster will look like.
