As the entire MLB starts spring training, one question is on my mind for the summer of 2024: Can the Detroit Tigers win the AL Central? The Tigers have been a trainwreck since the early 2010s, and ever since, they have been in the midst of one of the longest rebuilds in MLB history. However, the tide has changed; Detroit is itching for a title in some way, shape, or form. While the Tigers face stiff competition, several factors suggest they could have a legitimate shot at clinching the division title.
Emerging Talent
The Tigers boast an up-and-coming crop of young, talented players who could be key contributors this season. Among them:
Spencer Torkelson, the first baseman exudes confidence, stating to ClickOnDetroit, “Everyone knows we can win this division.” His performance will be crucial for the Tigers; in the 2023 season, Tork had 611 at-bats, posting a .233 average with 31 home runs. This is a bat that the Tigers will count on; he needs to stay healthy.
If he stays healthy, Riley Greene can significantly impact the team’s offense. Greene had 378 at-bats in the 2023 season while boasting a .288 average with 11 home runs. Like I said, if Greene stays healthy, he can be one of the most impactful young players for the Tigers.
Tarik Skubal, with his impressive potential, can severely impact this squad in a good way. If Skubal continues his All-Star performance, he also has a great chance to contend for the 2024 Cy Young or MVP.
Unsung Talent
While stars grab headlines, unsung heroes often make the difference. Here are a couple of under-the-radar players to watch in the farm system or content to make the 60-man roster:
Colt Keith
Keith has been the talk of Detroit ever since he emerged on the scene in early 2023; Keith slashed an impressive .327 batting average with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs. Keith has the overwhelming potential to make an MLB debut with the Tigers this year; however, insiders from the Tigers organization don’t know when this will be.
Justice Bigbee
Bigbee is a prospect who transformed from a 19th-round pick to the brink of an MLB debut. His emergence after the 2023 season was remarkable, thanks partly to personal hitting coach Mike Hessman. In 2023, Bigbie slashed an impressive .343/.405/.537 with 20 home runs; he’s primarily an outfielder. However, he could also be a solution at third base, a position the Tigers need clarity on.
Divisional Odds
Let’s consider the odds. As of right now, favorites to win the AL Central include:
- The Minnesota Twins are the favorites with a -140 payout.
- The Tigers right behind at +350.
- The Cleveland Guardians follow with a +400.
Weak AL Central
The AL Central was the only division in 2023, with just one team finishing with a winning record. This suggests the competition isn’t as fierce as in other divisions, giving the 2024 Detroit Tigers a shot. As many will say—the Tigers are still rebuilding—I don’t believe this to be true; in fact, the Detroit Tigers are emerging into what could be the next superpower in baseball. I don’t know if the Tigers will win the division or finish with a winning record this year but be looking, they’re right on the horizon.
While the Tigers face challenges, their blend of emerging talent, unsung heroes, and a relatively weak division provides a compelling case for their success. If they can capitalize on these factors, 2024 might indeed be the year they reclaim the AL Central crown. Detroit is so back, baby.
