With week one of the NFL in the books and wrapped up, it leaves many fans wondering not only about their teams but about their fantasy lineups as well.
It was a very unpredictable and frustrating day for many, as often their key players decided to do absolutely nothing and ruin their whole day. But there were also a lot of happy people, as surprise people came through and delivered a lot of points.
It starts off with the players whose fantasy owners banked on them to produce, and they absolutely vanished. These players were huge busts throughout the first week.
Week One Busts
Number 5,
Saquon Barkley. He had fifteen touches for a total of fifty-one yards in their blowout loss. This one is super frustrating because a lot of people were banking on Barkley to get things rolling quickly, but the offense looked so pitiful it was not even funny. Barkley, who is supposed to be a back top in the NFL and a valuable running back on any fantasy team after week one, poses early concern as to whether the Giants’ offensive line can give Barkley any blocks to produce anything. Barkley ended with 9.3 fantasy points.
Number 4,
Number four on the list of this week’s biggest busts: Lamar Jackson. When I say I am disappointed, I mean it. For someone who is supposed to have a breakout year and be a top-five NFL quarterback, this performance was not it whatsoever. Lamar Jackson only dropped back a total of 22 times and only went for 169 yards, and threw one pick for a 13.6 QBR and a completion percentage of 77.3%. This was an absurdly bad day for Lamar and hopefully the last. He is such a high-value fantasy player this year, and to see him put up this bad of stats against the struggling Texans is very concerning. But again, hopefully, this was his only bad game, and fantasy owners can rest easy the rest of the year as he hopefully starts to produce. After week one, he only put up 6.56 points–which, again for a quarterback, is awful.
Number 3
On the list of biggest busts is sure enough another quarterback, arguably another top-five quarterback. It was safe to say it was not a good day for top QBs, as Joe Burrow makes his way into this category. Joe Burrow did so badly that he was actually benched in the second half after going 14 for 31 on passing attempts, with a total of 82 yards. His completion percentage was 45.2 and a QBR of 20.4. These stats of this man alone just speak volumes of how bad he played. Even though he just become the highest-paid player in NFL history, he still decided to perform like he was a fourth-string who never played. This one is worse for fantasy players because some people had him higher than Lamar, and even though Lamar was awful, Joe Burrow somehow found a way to top it. Joe Burrow ended with a total of 3.18 as a QB. That is absolutely insane.
Number 2
We had a player who decided to just not even show up like he could’ve been at home, and he still would’ve put up the same amount of points. Tee Higgins had an absolutely awful day, which is mainly his fault, but you do have to factor in Joe Burrow’s awful performance as well. Tee Higgins was so bad that he was targeted eight times and caught zero. Yes, he made zero catches on eight attempts. The only good thing that came out of this was that he got targeted eight times; other than that, there’s not much more to say. Higgins ended with 0.0 points and was a literal waste of a spot on people’s starting lineups. If I were a Tee Higgins owner, I would be scared because, one he can’t catch, and two, because of Burrow’s absolutely awful day.
Number 1
It is not one but two players, arguably two of the worst wide receiver performances from top targets on their team. First off is Drake London. I would be super concerned if you were a Drake London owner in week one. Not only did he get zero points, but he was also targeted only one time! Only being targeted one time should be alarming. The fact that he is supposed to be wide receiver one material speaks volumes on how bad this is. Hopefully, it was just a fluke week. And tying him was Kadrious Toney; if you have him, I just don’t know what to say. He had five targets for one catch. He is supposedly one of Mahomes’ favorite targets on the new-looking offense, but the fact that he had three drops and caused a pick-six, all while only hauling in one catch for one yard, is awful. Hopefully, he shines in the weeks to come and is not a complete bust because right now, he is not looking like a valuable flex or even a bench player with his week one performance.
Highest Point Getter
And let’s not forget to talk about the week’s best points-getter. Tyreek Hill is showing why he was a first-round pick in fantasy drafts and can lead your team to a fantasy championship. I do believe the hype around him, and I do believe he can make a case for best recovery in the league after we saw how included he was in that Dolphins offense. He was targeted 15 times while taking in 11 of those for a total of 215 yards and two touchdowns with a total of 44.5 fantasy points. He clearly showed why he is the number one target in that offense; his speed makes him clearly unrecoverable. In my opinion, he will be one of the top performers this year in fantasy across the big board in any position. Tyreek will have his best season, and week one has only just concluded.
Player to watch
Now for the player to watch. Every week there is one player who just shines and performs so well. Oftentimes, it’s a sleeper who comes out of no wear. This week is Puca Nacua; he was Matthew Stafford’s clear new number-one target in the absence of Cooper Kupp. Puca had 15 targets for 10 catches and a total of 119 yards. This is very promising as the number of targets is extremely high, and the fact Cooper Kupp is on IR, he will be a good target for the next three weeks at least. He is definitely a guy you want to try to snag on the waiver wire as soon as possible. He will definitely morph into a valuable flex for the weeks to come or even a starting Wide receiver.
I will be back next week. The week two five biggest bust and top performers. But until then, keep an eye on those players and definitely watch for improvement but also, at the same time, if you have Tyreek Hill right now, you have one of the most valuable guys in all of fantasy.
