I, for one, have always had a love for clothes. This includes my affinity for chic activewear, as I’m always fanning over the latest releases from Lululemon, Outdoor Voices, Alo, etc. Therefore, let me introduce my column: Lily’s Looks. I’ll be picking a professional sports match from the past couple of weeks and analyzing their choice of wear, its price, breathability, and more.
As most in the tennis world know, the famed US Open is currently underway. With it brings a wave of the latest styles from Nike, Adidas, and other brands. The competition is of extraordinary quality, both in the men’s and women’s draws—a notable example is a third-round match between American Jennifer Brady and Danish former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.
Wozniacki triumphed over Brady 4-6 6-3 6-1, sporting a cerulean blue Adidas jumpsuit. This outfit is part of Adidas’s New York collection, which is meant to honor Billie Jean King’s win in the Battle of the Sexes fifty years ago. I was aghast upon seeing her outfit choice. Typically, a one-piece in tennis comes in the form of a skirt attached, rather than a short bodysuit. Her choice is a bit more revealing than I’d prefer, and I can’t picture myself wearing it; however, the uniqueness of it does branch away from the stereotypical tennis dress, something I like.
This deep blue jumpsuit is named the Fall Slam Pro Set, featuring a ribbed texture, a half-zip front, and a removable pleated skirt. Wozniacki wears this dress without the skirt, unlike other competitors Elina Svitolina and Jessica Pegula. It also boasts laser-cut perforations on the front and back for added breathability, and ‘AEROREADY’ moisture wicking, leaving it breathable. It retails on Tennis Warehouse for $130.
Lily’s Analysis:
Style: (colors, fabric, composition) 5/10
Function: (comfort, breathability) 7/10
Wozniacki’s opponent, Brady, wore a simple black dress, emblazoned with the logos “FICO” and “Flex Seal,” obviously the results of advertising. A definite brand logo isn’t seen on this dress, as she is currently partnered with Flex Seal. Personally, I’m not a fan. The US Open is a monumental event for the best tennis players in the world and is a time to show off unique hues, patterns, and more. Whilst the classic simplicity of her dress is liked, I can’t get behind the minimalism.
Her dress is high-neck, with an average length. It features a split hem, the most interesting part of the dress. As the dress isn’t up for retail, the price and extra features remain unknown, but the material looks to be comfortable. It has no evident additions for breathability, leaving me doubting that it keeps Brady cool enough.
Lily’s Analysis:
Style: (colors, fabric, composition) 2/10
Function: (comfort, breathability) 2/10
Between Wozniacki and Brady, I much prefer Wozniacki’s style; her outfit has more eye-pleasing aesthetics. Wozniacki also matched the theme of her outfit well with matching blue nails, a small detail I appreciate. An argument cannot be made for Brady’s outfit, and her clothing in this year’s US Open is disappointing compared to her last tournaments.
