Boys varsity wrestling takes on Lowell with a greater purpose

Winter sports have mostly ended in Ranger country, and for the boys varsity wrestling team, the group has finished its season at the team regionals on February 15, at Kenowa High School, against Lowell.

“Lowell is a tough team to beat; they are ranked #40 in the nation. The Rangers fought their best and gave it their all,” Alex Korff said.

The team suffered Wednesday against the Lowell Red Arrows in its regional competition at Kenowa High School before the individual regional tournament that will follow soon behind it. This was an extremely important night for the Rangers, as the Red Arrows are no stranger to sweeping the state and any points they can put on the board would be valuable no matter the overall outcome. Going up against rockstar teams like that is a great way to see how you stack up against some of the best of the best, and even though the team may not have won, the two wrestlers that put points on the board showed what it means to be Ranger strong.

Juniors Alex Korff and Josh Elzinga won by points in the third period putting three points each on the board for FHC making the score 66-6 at the end of the match. This may not have been the outcome the team was aiming for, but this was a proud Ranger showing and this was a night that the boys can be proud of trying their best.

Although the team may be done with all-around competitions, the four mighty Rangers remaining will be taking it further on Saturday, February 18, for the individual regional tournament for a chance to make it to the state championship. Not only will they be bringing pride to the FHC name, but they will also be bringing all their skills from the past three to four years to leave it all on the mat for what could be their last time.
