Boys varsity wrestling had multiple Rangers place in the individual district tournament
The individual district tournament means wrestling is of high importance, and when the boys varsity wrestling team showed up at Hastings High School, on February 11, for the MHSAA division two competition, the group did just that.
“Overall, the team stuck to its guns, got out on the mat to accomplish their own goals to the best of their abilities, and made me proud to be on a team with such hardworking peers,” senior Everett Phipps said.
With excitement brewing after the Rangers won the team districts earlier in the week, the individual tournament is always personal and can be a senior’s last time out on the mat. While this may have been the case for some athletes, FHC put on a show for all to see and numerous wrestlers proved they have what it takes to advance onto regionals.
From the junior class, Alex Korff placed fourth overall in the 190 lb weight class, giving him a one-way ticket to the next level while three seniors showed up to shut down their opponents like clockwork; Michael Campbell got fourth in the 157 class, Landon Cooke took third in his 165 lb group, and Blake Jacobs stole third as well in his 138 group. With four Rangers in different weight classes and skill levels representing at regionals, there is no telling how heated the competition could get in the upcoming weeks.
Reflecting on their performances, some of the winners know it won’t be a cakewalk at the next level, but that doesn’t mean a win can’t be in their future.
“It feels great that I get to continue my season, but I still have lots more work to put in if I want to make it to states,” Michael said.
As this competition gets more demanding and the stakes get higher, the boys will be training day and night for their upcoming showcase and a shot to win it all in the next few weeks. Although the date, time, and location for regionals are currently to be decided, there is no doubt that the Rangers are ready to rumble and take on any opponent of any size.
