FHC wrestling wraps up January going 2-3 in an action-packed weekend
With January coming to an end, the winter sports season at FHC is starting to conclude as well, but for the varsity wrestling team, the fun won’t end until the very last match.
On Saturday, January 28, the team took on five opponents in an action-packed day of competition. The boys faced off against Mason Country Central, Newaygo, Hart, Kent City, and Sparta, and the morning was filled with thrilling pins and nail-biting matches that traveled into the third period and were determined by points.
“We faced some very tough teams this weekend, but we stepped up to the challenge and wrestled very well,” senior Michael Campbell stated.
The team had strong performances against Mason Country Central and Newaygo taking the wins to put them on the board. This is important with the OK White Conference meet coming up and then the post-season soon to follow. Although the team fell to Hart, Spart, and Kent City, this was a great eye-opener for the wrestlers who struggled to get the pins and points they needed for practice this week so that when they get back to the mats they are ready to go.
“It was a rough day,” head coach Brad Anderson said. “Unfortunately, we are a bit shorthanded again and that makes it tough at a team dual tournaments setting. Luckily, we will regroup this week for the conference meet and the postseason which starts February 8.”
Even though the boys may not have done as well as they hoped, seniors Landon Cooke and Blake Jacobs went 4-1 for the day and helped secure crucial points for the Rangers that helped their overall scores.
With the season winding down, the Ranger’s record for the season is 12-10 and with a few matches left, the team can only improve from here as they put it all on the line to prove they rock with the best. This week the team has two matches with the first one being senior night on Wednesday, February 1, at 7 pm, at home followed by the OK White Tournament, away on Friday, February 3, at 5 pm. Make sure to stay up to date on results and find out who may have a chance of advancing all the way to Ford Field.
