FHC wrestling goes 2-1 in an impressive showing against big-name schools
Now that the school year is back in full swing, the FHC boys varsity wrestling team is amped up and ready for any opponent thrown its way; the Rangers proved this statement during the weekend on Saturday, January 15, when they took on three teams on a heated day of competition.
“Overall, the team wrestled well,” head coach Brad Anderson stated. “We squeaked a win out against Kalamazoo Central and looked very solid against East Kentwood. Fremont, a very good division two team, exposed some weaknesses that we need to work on this upcoming week.“
The team took on East Kentwood with a strong showing and came out with a 54-30 victory to prove that it wasn’t going down without a fight and although the boys fell 54-26 to Fremont in a valiant effort, they still managed to pull one out against Kalamazoo Central, leaving them 2-1 for the day. This was extremely impressive considering the boys have only had two matches since their long break started on December 17 of last year for the holidays; the way the boys have been able to bounce right back from the break and show up in the way that they did is truly an effort to proud of.
“The whole team wrestled very well today,” senior Michael Campbell said. “We performed great against good competition.”
Speaking of Michael, coach Anderson had plenty to say about his performance against a Kalamazoo competitor that made him stand out from the rest.
“Michael Campbell probably had his best day yet on the mat,” coach Anderson said proudly. “Three pins and his third pin against Kalamazoo Central was against a very solid 157-pounder.”
Michael’s stellar showing wasn’t the only one put on display though; a fellow senior who is always under the communities spotlight as a high-profile wrestling threat had yet another notable day out on the mats.
“Landon Cooke continues to impress. He beat the number nine ranked wrestler in division one by a score of 13-2,” coach Anderson beamed.
With all of the accomplishments this week in the wrestling community, time will only tell what other impressive titles the Rangers can add in the next week with a back-to-back weekend with two action-packed home matches with the first being on Friday, January 20, at 5 PM, and the following day Saturday, January 21, at 9 AM.
