Girls varsity field hockey back at it with a win against Rockford
More stories from Olivia Oorbeck
After the loss to East Grand Rapids, the girls varsity field hockey team was more than determined to get a win, and that’s precisely what they did. They played against Rockford and won 3-0, leaving their record 5-1-0.
Even with a disappointing loss the week before, the girls went into the game against Rockford, wanting and craving a win. In the first quarter, they played with much intensity, and Noelle Stewart, a senior at FHC, displayed that perfectly. She was able to score the first goal of the game.
“I felt proud knowing I helped out my team,” she said. “Even though they had an advantage on the scoreboard, that didn’t stop or slow them down.”
In the second quarter, they went into it with more determination than in the first. Although they already had an advantage, they wanted to grow that lead even more. Abby Almassian, a senior at FHN, extended that lead with a second goal for Forest Hills. With the new goal, the excitement and adrenaline started to flow between the team.
“I was happy to score a goal to help get a higher goal difference between us and Rockford,” she said. “It felt great to get the first goal of my senior year.”
The score going into the third quarter was 2-0, but they were far from giving up. Even though no goals were scored in the third quarter, they still played with much dedication.
Then the final quarter came. They knew they couldn’t give up the lead they worked so hard to get, and Maddie Shaner, a junior at West Michigan Aviation Academy, was able to gain another goal for the girls. This left the final score of the game to 3-0.
With this win, the girls could regain the confidence and momentum they had lost from the game before with East Grand Rapids. The girls are ready to go into their next game against East Grand Rapids again and hopefully come out with a win. They will be playing them at the East Grand Rapids field on September 13 at 7:30 p.m.
“Winning today really pumped us up, and I think that we are ready to take East Grand Rapids,” Abby said. “I believe that we can take the win against them.”
