Girls varsity field hockey team falls to East Grand Rapids but they look to bounce back

Rain has never stopped Forest Hills before, and that happened again with the girl’s varsity field hockey game on Monday, August 29. The girls went into the game ready to play against one of their biggest rivals, East Grand Rapids.

Although the girls went into the game craving for a win, they weren’t able to come out with one. That didn’t stop them, though, from giving East Grand Rapids a fight for the win. One person that portrayed this perfectly was Logan Kirkwood, junior at FHE. She was able to score the first goal of the game in the first quarter, which allowed the girls to get a sense of confidence against East Grand Rapids.

“I felt really joyful and hyped up after I scored the goal,” Logan said. “We typically struggle to score against EGR so being the first one to score felt really good to put us at an advantage.”

In the second quarter, another goal was scored by Maddie Shaner, junior at West Michigan Aviation Academy. But they started to fall behind in the third quarter with a score of 4-2. Even with the disadvantage against East Grand Rapids, the girls made sure to still play hard and not give up. “[We] started letting up in the third but we came back with fire in the fourth quarter to end the game with high energy,” Logan said.

For many teams, a loss can ruin the rest of their season, but that is not the case for the girls’ varsity field hockey team. They are more than ready to come back and compete against Rockford at home on Wednesday, September 7 at 6 p.m. They have never lost to Rockford, and they are determined to keep that legacy going, but they know that they will still have to give it their all.

“We are all feeling confident about our game against Rockford because we have won against them in the past and they are a fairly new team to the sport,” Logan stated. “But we still have to go into the game just like any other and start out strong.”
