This past Saturday, the girls varsity field hockey team went into its game ready for another win. In the past two weeks, the girls have gone into all of their games fired up and have come out with victories; this week wasn’t any different against Grosse Pointe South.
Walking onto the field, the girls knew that they would have to play hard and be ready for anything that came their way. In the first quarter, both teams played extremely well, leaving the score at 0-0. Once the girls got into their groove in the second quarter though, there was no way for Grosse Pointe South to come back.
Mia Dye, junior at FHE, was the first point of the game. This goal not only gave confidence to her but to the rest of her team as well. In the second quarter, she gave her team a larger lead by scoring another goal and secures them the lead going into halftime with 2-0.
“While the goals I had today will have my name attached to them, it’s always a team effort,” Mia said. “I get so excited because I know my teammates will be proud of me.”
In the third quarter, the girls played even harder. Although Grosse Pointe South gained a goal, that didn’t stop or discourage them. The girls kept their heads held high and played harder than before. By the fourth quarter, the girls were craving this win and would stop at nothing to gain it. One player that showed this was Maria Jacobs, a senior at FHN, who scored the final goal of the game.
In the end, the girls won 3-1 and improved their record to 4-0-0. However, this won’t stop them from winning more. Their next game will be at home against East Grand Rapids on Monday, August 29, at 6:00 PM. The girls know this next game will be a tough one, but they are ready to keep fighting for the win.
“EGR always wants to beat us and we feel the same way,” Maria said. “Hopefully we will get the win, and if we play how we did today I have no doubts that it will be a close game, and we will need some cheering from supporters!”
