Forest Hills Central has a strong sports program built by its amazing athletes and the teams that, time after time, prove that there is no better school to represent. Among the Rangers’ talented teams is the girls varsity soccer team, who has executed a handful of one-sided matchups. Thursday night’s district final was no different.

“I’m very excited to take the field again with this great group of girls and I feel that if we play to our potential we are unstoppable,” senior Katie Hurbanis said. “We are taking everything game by game, but I feel confident that we can be unbeatable if we share the ball, play our best, and never get outworked.”

On Thursday, June 2, the Lady Rangers kept this statement alive when they put all of their skills and tricks together to create something magical as they took on Cedar Springs in the district finals at home.

Senior athletes like Theryn Hallock, Katie Hurbanis, Mattie Sexton, and Ava Wilberding had their hands full on the field not only keeping the ball moving downfield but also defending their own goal to keep the score for Cedar at zero.

“I’m feeling very confident going into tonight’s game because we have been preparing a lot to make it to this point and I know we will execute everything we have worked on as a team,” Mattie Sexton said. “If we work hard and play our game we will get the outcome we want.”

Going into this game, the girls had been working to stay on top of not only their practices but also have been working on getting ready physically to be in the best shape possible for the big game.

“I think the team is for sure prepared for tonight and we are definitely ready for another dub,” Theryn Hallock said. “We have been practicing very hard and focusing on the details that are needed to get the outcome we want; along with that, we have been hydrating, resting, and eating well, too.”

After one half of gameplay, the Lady Rangers were up 4-0 on Cedar and only planned to expand their big lead as the rest of their game went on. Luckily for the girls, they didn’t have to worry about keeping Cedar away and could focus on scoring themselves. At the end of the game, the girls won 8-0 against their opponent and successfully won the district finals by a landslide.

“This win really boosts all of our confidence because we know what we are capable of doing,” Mattie said. “Picking up another win just adds to the amount of precious time we have together, which increases our energy even more, knowing that we get to play together longer to reach our final goal of winning a state championship.”

The team will compete next on Tuesday, June 7, when they travel to Cedar Springs in hopes of picking up another win for the books against rival East Grand Rapids.

“[This win] boosts our confidence by showing us that we are able to beat good teams and when we play together as one we are unstoppable,” Katie said. “It gives us confidence both as a team and individually to never give up and show our opponent that we aren’t going to stop working for what we want.”
