Freshman baseball came out with a victory against the Byron Center Bulldogs on April 26. FHC had things moving quickly in the first inning with Max Holser doubling on an 0-1 count, scoring one run.

Isaiah Wright earned the victory for freshman baseball. The pitcher struck out nine batters and went for five innings. Within just the first inning, the boys gave Isaiah some run support with five runs scored. In the second inning, FHC extended its lead to 7-0 on some notable hits from Brady Osterhouse and Gibby Grendel. At the top of the fourth, two more runs were scored. Freshman baseball took the victory against Byron Center by a final score of 12-3.

The freshman took on Lowell next in dramatic fashion. The game was a battle of defense until the top of the third when Lowell scored two. FHC answered back in the top of the fourth with two runs of its own from Aaron Schellenberg and Henry Streeter.

Freshman baseball shut down Lowell’s chance to expand the lead and transitioned to the bottom of the fifth inning with hits and runs on its mind. A quick single by Isaiah to left field allowed him to steal second and be in scoring position for Max. It only took one pitch for Max to single to right field to score Isaiah for the win. The final score was 3-2.

The second game of the Lowell double-header did not go as planned. Lowell’s first run was scored after a dropped third strike. While many of the boys could get on base with solid hits, they would not run much farther than second or third base.

Lowell scored its second run in the second and FHC saw the lead slowly getting away. The top of the third was no different for the Red Arrows, with two runs scored. However, FHC did have one run scored by Matthew Geib, but the offense lacked after that. The boys took their first loss with runners left on base in many innings. Luckily, they had one more game to redeem themselves.

FHC took on Caledonia with no trouble on offense. With Isaiah’s three runs scored in the second inning, the boys took the lead and ran with it. Seder Middaugh took the win for the boys by going for five innings and striking out five.

Freshman baseball totaled nine hits against the Fighting Scots; Isaiah and Max both collected multiple hits to lead the team. Brady Osterhouse led the team in stolen bases with two, and the boys came to win with a final score of 7-1.

Freshman baseball will take on East Grand Rapids at home on Tuesday, May 3, at 4:15.
