Girls varsity tennis gets through tough non-conference schedule
Facing a grueling schedule, the girls varsity tennis team played sharp competition early in the season to prepare for the remainder of the season. Facing powerhouse programs such as Seaholm and Midland Dow, the girls fought hard this week at the Midland Quad.
With another great showing from the second and fourth singles flights, underclassmen Lily Ohlman and Quinn Breslin took down multiple opponents in back-to-back quads. Lily beat Seaholm 6-2 and 6-4; she also took on Traverse City Central and toppled her opponent by scores of 6-4 and 6-0.
Quinn also defeated Traverse City Central with two 6-0 sweeps, winning without losing a single game. She also beat Midland Dow in a closer game, winning 7-5 and 6-4 in extra points. Flipping over to the doubles flights–highlighted by a solid performance from the fourth doubles team–the girls had success. The duo of Leila Gonzalez and Grace Chen took down Midland Dow 7-5 and 6-4 and then beat Traverse City Central more handily 6-0 and 6-1.
Moving forward into the conference matches, the lineups will be set as the team pushes to make a run. As conference matches start for the girls, the end goal of the season comes more into view: the state tournament.
“Once we start conference matches and lineups get set, that’s when the season really starts,” senior captain Leila Gonzalez said. “These pre-season tournaments are to help us get better and prepare for the season.”
