Like last year’s JV baseball team accomplished, the boys threw a collective no-hitter against rival FHN. On Friday, April 15, the boys took on the Huskies in a doubleheader. The previous games were rained out, leading the team to play two games instead of one.

Game one began with sophomore Matthew Seurynck on the bump. The pitcher lasted four and two-thirds innings and allowed zero hits and runs. Seurynck only allowed one walk and struck out nine batters.

It was the top of the fifth when sophomore Charlie Cole took over for Matthew. With three quick outs by the defense, Cole continued to cruise along with FHN’s lineup. After continuous walks, the Rangers put in their flame-throwing freshman, Braedon Rozema. The closer ended the game quickly with two strikeouts and a pop-out.

While the pitching was dominant by the Rangers, the bats were also hot. With sophomore Jacob Harleton on third, fellow sophomore Josh Tellier hit a sacrifice-fly to bring in the Rangers’ first run of the game. Northern’s pitching was a great downfall for the Huskies, with walks resulting in at least two runs.

Sophomore Alex Brown slugged in two more runs with a line drive to center field. The sophomore duo of Jacob Robertson and Alex Brown were how the offense was produced the most. Both players had two hits on the night.

The JV Rangers took a 6-2 victory over their district rivals.

“We played very well,” Brown said. “Our bats were turned up, and Matthew pitched a great game.”

Game two had Braedon Rozema on the mound once again. Rozema only surrendered one run on two hits over his three starting innings while striking out four. The bats were quiet until the third inning, when Harleton singled on a line drive to the shortstop to start a rally. Harleton then stole not only second base but also third.  Sophomore Mason McDonald’s single to center field brought in the Rangers’ first run of the night.

The second run was scored by sophomore Chase Enbody on a sac-fly to score McDonald and advance Tellier to third. The rally ended there, as the boys moved into the top of the fourth.

Sophomore Trevor Williams was subbed in to pitch and gave the boys three quick outs to end the top of the fourth. Freshman Max Richardson crushed a double into left field to begin the final push.

Jacob Robertson wanted more after a successful first game and played some small ball by bunting and advancing Richardson to third while successfully speeding to first. Brown had unfinished business, scoring Richardson on a shot back to the pitcher. On a hard ground ball to the centerfielder, Robertson scored off a hard single from McDonald.

“We came out slow at first,” Brown said. “Our pitching kept us in the game until we came back to life.”

We are feeling solid going into this next week, we all hope for a winning season.

The Rangers shut the Huskies down 5-2 and again added to their win column. JV baseball will be playing Greenville at home on Monday, April 18, at 4:15 pm to keep their streak rolling.
