In its inaugural match of the season, the girls varsity tennis team faced off against West Ottawa. With a young roster, the Rangers fell to the Panthers 2-6. The team fought hard but just couldn’t get it done. 

While the Rangers lost, the match showed that with practice and experience, the team’s young core would be a force to be reckoned with later in the season. Sophomore Lily Ohlman won her match in two sets, 7-5 and 6-3. Lily, playing two singles, is a very high-caliber player for the flight. Freshman Quinn Breslin won her first high school match in three sets. After falling in the first set 3-6, the nerves of her first match were gone, and she channeled her energy to take the following two sets 6-2 and 6-2. After trying out to play doubles, Quinn moved to play four singles shortly after tryouts ended. 

Another notable final is Libby Moog losing 3-6, 3-6. Playing her first match since the beginning of her junior season, Libby is excited to be back out on the court for the Rangers.

“I have been looking forward to my first match back on the court for a while,” Libby said. “Although it wasn’t the outcome I was hoping for, it felt good to get back out on the court for the team.”

The junior tandem of Megan Fox and Brooke Kushak also had a close match losing 5-7 and 3-6. Playing one doubles, the duo will have one of the hardest schedules this season for the Rangers.

With a promising performance behind them, the team looks back on it as a learning experience. 

“Ottawa is a good team,” captain Libby Moog stated. “It is a good match to get out of the way. It shows us what our strengths are and what we need to work on.” 

The Rangers’ next match is a quad at Northville on Saturday, April 16.
