The girls varsity water polo season is splashing into action

As the winter season ends and the spring begins, the varsity water polo team is ready to take to the pool and splash its opponents in its first game on March 18.

The players have been working hard to get themselves ready for the competition ahead and cannot wait to prove that they rule the pool. Last year was a year to remember, and girls like senior Caroline Bell reminisce about their old team along with their determination to beat teams like East Kentwood for revenge.

“Last year we had a really strong team. We had fun growing as a team and we always did our best during games,” Caroline said. “I think we would all love to beat East Kentwood this year since we lost to them at districts last year.”

The varsity water polo team is coached by Dennis Neat, who has done a wonderful job over the seasons helping the team work closer. Junior Sydney VanLente loves the friendships and connections her team has already made in these last few weeks.

“I really like bonding with the team and getting to practice with my friends on the team,” Sydney said. “We have a lot of fun getting to know each other better than we would normally.”

The season is long and full of challenges, but with 27 games in the span of 3 months, the girls will always be in the water practicing their hearts out and swimming victory circles around their home pool.

Although the team will have many new players, some of the players who will be making an impact are ladies like Avery Verlinde, Sophia Johnson, Caroline Bell, and Sydney VanLente along with many more.

“I am excited to finish my senior year on a good note with water polo,” Caroline said. “I have been swimming and playing water polo for a while, so it is a full-circle experience. It will be a fun season with my friends and it will be a good way to end my high school career.”

The girls varsity water polo team has its first game Friday, March 18, followed by a game Saturday, March 19, against multiple opponents. With all the excitement in the span of the next few days, it is only a matter of time until people see just how far the team will go.
